Random Thoughts IV: Thanksgiving

I have been going through a lot these past 2 days. Rather than explain it, I'd prefer to copy and paste what I wrote on my facebook page. I hope you understand.

I don't even know how to start this one.

I don't want to discuss any details. I chose not to find all of the details out.

One of my closest friends has been a victim of domestic violence. As a result, she lost one of her eyes.

That is all I will say in that regard. Don't ask me how when or why. Please understand my need for non-disclosure.

Just be thankful for Thanksgiving. Be thankful for what you have and what you don't have. In the Eight Limbs of Yoga, the first two limbs are the Yamas and Niamas. These are the abstinences and the observances (in that order). One of the Yamas is aparighara or non-greed (non-hoarding).

Greed is the root of all desire.
Desires can be good or bad.

You should get the drift.

Just because you don't have this or that doesn't mean that you have to groan and moan and get depressed about it. There could be a good reason the universe (aka you already know) has for not providing it to you
at this time. Even if it is never provided, do not fret over what is not presently in front of you. We must live in the present and trust me, there are those who are far worse off than you.

Thinking about what you don't have also leads to not appreciating what is laid out in front of you. YOU ARE ALIVE. You can sit in front of a computer and read what I have just typed. You have access to food, shelter, love, and all that the world has to offer. You have a little bit of it now and what you lack, I'm sure it is bountiful in another area that you are overlooking.

So this Thanksgiving, when you get that food on your plate, say a prayer before you eat that food. When you wake up tomorrow morning, thank the Lord for that first inhale you take as you stretch so that you can wake up and go about your day.If you get to share tomorrow with family and friends, praise God that you have people to see and enough money to go and see them. Can't see your loved ones? Give thanks for the telephone, WebCams, YouTube, email, and good old fashioned writing a letter.

Let's give thanks for the simple things in life. The things that we overlook the most - food, air, shelter, a pot to piss in, life, this earth.

There are terrorist acts going on right now in India. What can you do about that? Nothing much from wherever you are. But you can still be thankful that you are able to say a prayer for the people who have died and are hostages down there. See? The simple things can be more than enough.
